Don’t miss our exclusive and fun interview with the Queen of Knits, Sonia Rykiel and find out what she told the Fustany Team.

How did it all start?
In May 1968, I opened my first boutique, rue de Grenelle, on the left bank in Paris, after having worked for my husband, Sam Rykiel, in his store called Laura. In 1962, I started to design women’s sweaters and dresses for the store Laura, as I couldn’t find these styles in other boutiques. The sweaters quickly became my emblematic value. Consecrated the « Queen of knits » by the American magazine Women’s Wear Daily in 1968, I later invented the inverted seam, the “no hem” and the “no lining.” I have created a unique style recognizable worldwide and whose most visible codes are black, stripes and written words on sweaters.

What inspires you the most?
Politics, life and my children.

How do you feel about being named the “Queen of knits”?
Happy!!

How do you define fashion?
I don’t give a definition for Fashion because for me fashion is un fashion. I have created the demode. My philosophy for fashion, the “DEMODE”, explains to women that they must adapt fashion to themselves, rather than follow a fashion designer’s diktats.

What is your favorite color and fabric for this season?
My favourite color is black - I love to wear black. It’s like a pen that defines the shape. For this season I love fuchsia and vivid colors like green. I’ve played a lot with color blocks.

How did your collaboration with H&M start?
They contacted Nathalie as they were really interested in the brand, since the codes are recognisable. What’s next? I have to think about it… I like to be seduced!

If you were to choose another designer to work with H&M, who would it be?

I would love to see Jean Paul Gaultier or Nicolas Ghesquiere collaborating with H&M.

Describe a “Sonia Rykiel Woman” in three words.
Free, seductive, cultivated.

If you were to choose another job, other than a fashion designer, what would it be?

Writer. I have already published 9 books, but I would love to have more time to write.

Three things you can't live without...
My family, my friends, my fashion team.

What is the best and the worst trend that has ever been followed in fashion?

There is no best and worst trend. I always explain to women that they have to spend time in front of the mirror to study how they are beautiful and what they don’t like. This way they can work on their weaknesses.

If you had to describe your personal style in three words, what would they be?
Red hair, black dress or pants and platform shoes.
