The iconic Roberto Cavalli was one of the speakers at Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience 2014. While his talk was supposed to focus mainly on fashion and his company, it kind of took a different turn, and that’s why we decided to present you with what we like to call: the life lessons learned from Roberto Cavalli. WARNING, this is not your regular feature, it’s only fun, just like Roberto Cavalli!

LESSON 1: Denim is a big deal!

Roberto Cavalli said: Denim is something special. You can always wear it, the same pair of jeans can be worn whether in the evening with a special jacket and heels or when you do some shopping at the supermarket. For me, denim means freedom and that is the reason why it’s very successful within my brand.

LESSON 2: Do what excites you and the rest will follow.

Roberto Cavalli said: I started in 1970, and I didn’t know anything about fashion, but decided to start designing T-shirts and sweaters. One of the most exciting ideas for me was to experiment with printing on leather. I don’t want to offer minimalistic fashion.

LESSON 3: Women should feel sexy…

Roberto Cavalli said: I love women and that is why my fashion is successful. Most of the time I try to understand what a woman wants. Every woman would like to feel sexy and I want to help her be beautiful. When she wears a dress and feels that while looking in the mirror, in that exact moment she feels strong and passionate. My fashion is positive and sexual.

LESSON 4: Identify your target audience.

Roberto Cavalli said: The music world started to love me more than the movie world, because the actresses on the red carpet were looking to be more on the classic side, but Cavalli is not perfect for that kind of events. However, it was perfect for the Grammy’s. This changed one by one over the years, as in the Oscars at the moment actresses are also trying to be sexy.

LESSON 5: Relationships 101.

Roberto Cavalli said: Jennifer Lopez has a special place in my heart, I remember I met her the first time when she was Puff Daddy's girlfriend. One time, they were fighting and I was there and then she suddenly walked towards the door and stood outside waiting for the driver. I wanted to go out and help her, even though I knew Puff Daddy would be angry. Then I remembered something, in Italy we say: don’t put a finger between husband and wife.

LESSON 6: Being nervous happens to everyone.

Roberto Cavalli said: I got nervous a couple of times in front of celebrities and you would be shocked who they were; Julia Roberts, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

LESSON 7: Perfect is an overstatement.

Roberto Cavalli said (when asked about the definition of a perfect woman): Every woman should never be perfect. Perfect is boring. Every woman should know and love her personality. What I like in women is their eyes, because they speak and they are the most important feature. You can always tell a lot from them.

LESSON 8: Imitation is not always the sincerest form of flattery.

Roberto Cavalli said: When people copy my work it means my work is going towards the right direction, but I don’t like when they copy it exactly. Too many people do it exactly.

LESSON 9: Piece of advice for designers?

Roberto Cavalli said: The advice I would give young designers is to be different and to take risks.
